Waffle Warmth:
Sensory Covering
Dobby Woven Throw Blanket- 57”W x 72.5”L
Materials- Tencel Yarn, Merino Wool Yarn
After the experimentation with the test strip scarf, I wove a large throw blanket using the knowledge and experience with the structure I gained from the process. On graph paper I created a striating design, mathematically, for the sequences of color and material in the warp and weft. This was both for the visual appearance and also as a way to have the shape of the waffle squares change based on the ratio of tencel to wool yarns in them. Due to the differences inelasticity and shrinkage rates of tencel (3-4%) and merino wool (18-22%), the waffle squares change in both size and depth. The striation also creates an optical gradation of comforting colors and a textural gradation from the silky, smooth tencel shifting to the fuzzy, soft merino.
